AND NEXT WEEKEND LOOK FOR THE PENULTIMATE VERSION OF THE SCRATCH SHEET PRIOR TO OUR 50TH REUNION.

A.   Another Loss for the Class of ’60 Family

We  have been informed that early last week Classmate John Hagerty lost his oldest son, John Hagerty Jr.    Junior lived in Arizona, and died as a result of a construction accident where he was attacked by bees, and suffered a severe allergic reaction.  John, Sr. is on his way out there for the funeral, but has informed us that he’ll be back in Virginia Beach next weekend, and already has his bag packed to join us the following week for the 50th.  The class of 60 extends its condolences to John and the entire Hagerty family.  John can be reached at 757-509-0641.

B.   The Next to Last Report from the Reunion Committee

Well, it's finally arrived. Our 50th Anniversary Reunion Celebration is a few days away. The section below describes all the events planned for the weekend.  Any last minute changes from what you have already told us (the Planning Committee), or by omission, not told us, can be highly problematic, especially where we have to commit to meal counts, charges and seating space. Please read the following information carefully to understand your choices, and act accordingly.   We have only a very few days to modify our arrangements.

IF      you and/or guests plan to attend a particular event and have not yet let the Committee know,

or IF you will be unable to attend an event that you previously had indicated you would,

or if the number of people you indicated would attend an event has changed,

PLEASE LET JOE FRIGIOLA KNOW:  609-7020503 or JOEFRIGIOLA@COMCAST.NET

Finally if you plan to attend the Alumni dinner on Saturday night you need to make a reservation with the Alumni Association.   Call them at 215-232-8882 to assure you have a seat with your classmates.  You can pay by credit card over the phone, or pay at the door.

Elizabeth Laurent, the Director of the Girard Historical Collection, will conduct both tours for us. An hour and a half well spent. Call Joe Frigiola (609) 702-0503 to indicate your preference for the 10:00AM or 4:00 PM tour.

Honorary Diplomas will be presented to several classmates who left before graduation. We will also practice singing the 'Farewell Song' for Saturday's Chapel Service. Invited guests  include President Adkins, the Schiavo's, the McKendrick's and Bruce Schultz's, the Hum Dir of Music.

Hospitality Suite – Crowne Plaza Hotel

Time: 11:00pm til ?   Cost:  Free

End the day in another traditional way; a chance to hang out with old friends and embellish memories of the past.....maybe even see things in others beyond our perceptions as adolescents. (Can alcohol and fatigue do that?....Don't be surprised.)

Saturday, May 22

This day starts with an 8:00am Memorial Service in Olde St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church at 4th and Vine Streets for those inclined. This is considered Stephen Girard's church, and the Priest saying the mass is a former Hummer.  Also, there will be a  Wreath Ceremony at 9:15am at Stephen Girard's sarcophagus in Founder's Hall.   Al Bullock will present a wreath from our class along with a special contribution, a banner quilt, made by his wife, Bernadette.

Note: A complete schedule of Founder's Day activities sponsored by the GC Alumni Association will be included in your Welcome Pack

Chapel Service

Time:  10:00am – 11:35am  (Assemble at 9:15 in the Chapel rear to organize our processional)

The other marquee event! We get to relive our graduation. Our Class Speaker addresses the assembly of students, faculty, family and guests. We announce our Class Gift to the school. The Alumni Assn presents its' Stephen Girard Award. We get to sing the Farewell Song again. An emotional event for the sentimental at heart.

After the service, our families and guests remain in chapel to listen to a 15 minute recording, produced by Rich and Linda Adams from their interviews, depicting the experience of our Mom's upon entrusting their sons to Girard College. Don't miss this.

Note: The entire Chapel Service will be accessible live on-line for family, friends, and those who can not attend. To view the service, log on to GirardCollege.com. On the home page, there is a 'Site Shortcuts' section in the lower left portion. A link for the Founder's Day Chapel Service is not there now, but will be there on the day before. However, it will not be activated until just before the service at 9:00am.

Your grandkids will be impressed.

Note: Four groups will rotate through the four planned stops. With the time limited (campus activities are expected to end by 3:30), it is very important that the groups stay on schedule. Consider wandering elsewhere if you're not up for the pace.

An old-fashioned Record Hop. Only music from the 50's and 60's will be played. Requests accepted. Will bring back memories of Maggs McGhee, Leroy Knoll, and American Bandstand. Open to all (even if one did not attend dinner) but likely to be predominately our class.

Sunday, May 23

Discussion Groups - Banker Hall, Room 102

Time:  12noon – 2:30pm    Cost:  Only your time, and thoughtful reflections.

One last opportunity for sharing and reflection. Attendees will join in table group discussion of topics of interest, such as 'Most Memorable Teacher(s)', 'My Adjustment after the Hum', 'What it's like being Married to a Hummer' , 'The value of your vocational curriculum at Girard', or suggest your own topic. Learn how others valued the same experiences, then and now. What difference has 50 years made? Revisit some of life's lessons. Each group will report a brief summary to the whole group.

We have come a long way, but including outstanding commitments, we need only about $12,000 to meet our goal of $200,000. We still want to hear from the other 30 classmates.  Please don’t wait.  Send your check to Toby NOW.  Let’s get another 11 new names this week.

Checks can be sent to Myron Caplan, 208 Kinvara Drive, Pittsburgh, PA  15237.  Please note, this is a new address.  Toby moved in with his fiancee, Jeanne, who we will have the pleasure of meeting on Founder’s Day.  Checks should be made out to “GCAA” with “Class of 1960 Gift” written on the memo line.

Thanks for your support.   The committees’ recommendation on the uses of the Class Gift will appear in SS#21, next week.

D.  Corinthian II

Corinthian II is to be a bound volume of about 100 pages which gives us a new yearbook 50 years later.  We hope to have a piece on each classmate whether alive or dead, and whether graduate or not (the profiles).  Additionally we hope to have a large section discussing our time in the Hum year by year with many photos, and original contributions from many classmates.  You are aware that we’ve been getting as much of the profiles done by classmates as possible, so if you haven’t done yours, get to work and get it to Bob Culver, our publisher:  973-628-0786 or fabo2@verizon.net.  It has become clear that we will not be able to finish this for reunion week, but we’re shooting for July 1.  Joe Frigiola has added to his already formidable workload and agreed to reprise his role as art director of Corinthian I.  A draft sample of one of his dividers for the new volume is on the next page.

E.   Chapel Seating for Our Guests on Saturday Morning

Page 10 below shows a schematic of the chapel seating for us and our guests for the Saturday Chapel Services.  The sections labeled A, C, C, and D are the portions of the chapel forward of the balconies, and extending to the stage areas.  The class will sit in the two C sections.  The first two row areas 1, and 2 will be for those in wheelchairs and attendants.  Rows 3 through 6 will house the rest of us.  Our guests will occupy Rows 10 through 14 of the C sections, and will have overflow seating in the A and D sections, the raised areas of the main chapel, in rows 6 through 9.  There will be student ushers in all these areas, so guests need to indicate that they are guests of the Class of ’60.
